Using Ayurveda as Yoga Teachers!

Hi Reader,

It was such a joy to meet you all at your FolkSF teacher training last Saturday! I hope you walked away with some fresh insights on Ayurveda—both for yourself and your students.

And a big thank you for embracing the Kitcheree! I’ve dropped the recipe in the P.S. below so you can try it at home. Feel free to tweak the spices and veggies to your liking! Cooking this once a month is a simple way to reset your digestion. Let me know how it goes—I’d love to hear about your kitchen experiments.

Now, let’s talk about two small but powerful Ayurvedic practices you can start right now:

1. Tongue 👅 Scraping – The One-Minute Detox

Your tongue is like a window into your digestion. Each morning, toxins (Ama) build up overnight, creating a coating on the tongue. Scraping it away first thing in the morning helps:

🧘🏾‍♀️ Reduces bacteria and bad breath
🧘🏾‍♀️ Enhance your sense of taste
🤸🏾 Boosts digestion and metabolism
🧘🏽‍♂️ Gently stimulate your internal organs

How to do it: Use a tongue scraper (not your toothbrush!) and glide from back to front a few times until the coating is gone. Super easy.

Where to Get One:

💰 Budget-friendly: Amazon scraper – simple & effective.
🌿 Handcrafted: Paavani Ayurveda– beautiful copper scrapers made by women in Northern California (Use code Marisa10 for 10% off!).

2. Self-massage with Warm Oil (Abhyanga) 🙏

This practice is like giving your nervous system a big, warm hug. Abhyanga calms the mind, nourishes the skin, and supports deep relaxation. Curious? I made a step-by-step guide + video to walk you through it.

Father’s Day reflection on aging, effort, and Ayurveda and karma

Hi Reader, Happy Wednesday! Father’s Day is next week. Don’t forget about your dad. Whatever kind of man he was— or is — understanding the influence he had on you can offer surprising clarity. David + Ingrid 2010 I don’t see my father often, but I do see him. He’s a man’s man with a domestic streak — keeps his house and car clean, cooks for himself (not just BBQ!), and still volunteers planting redwood saplings in the Sequoia National Forest. He turns 89 in a few days. Born in 1936, he’s...
